The best chemical sunscreens have come a long way from the greasy, sting-your-eyes formulas many of us grew up with. Today's versions are airy, elegant, and often so comfortable to wear that you'll forget you even have SPF on—a major win, considering sunscreen is one of the most important steps in any skin-care routine. “Unlike mineral sunscreens, which sit on top of the skin, chemical sunscreens use organic UV filters that absorb UV radiation and convert it into heat, which is then released from the skin,” says Pearl Rimtepathip, MD, a board-certified dermatologist based in Atlanta. “These formulas tend to feel especially lightweight and are well-suited for everyday wear.”

Another perk? Because chemical filters are absorbed into the skin, they “generally blend in seamlessly without leaving behind a white cast,” she says. Whether you prefer a featherlight fluid, a hydrating serum, or a makeup-gripping primer, there's a chemical sunscreen for nearly every skin type, concern, and personal preference. Because at the end of the day—and whether you choose a chemical or mineral formula—“the best kind of sunscreen is the one you will use and apply the most,” says Dr. Rimtepathip.

Why it’s worth it: It's not every day that a new sunscreen filter gets FDA approval, so when one does, it's a pretty big deal. La Roche-Posay's Anthelios UVDefense SPF 50 Sunscreen is among the first to feature 2% bemotrizinol (BEMT), the first new FDA-approved sunscreen filter in more than two decades. The ingredient provides photostable UVA and UVB protection (photostable meaning that it doesn’t break down with sun exposure, which isn’t the case with every filter out there), while the brand's Cell-Ox Shield technology adds antioxidants to help defend against free radicals. Glycerin, butylene glycol, and dimethicone help keep dry skin hydrated and smooth, too.

The texture is just as noteworthy as the ingredient list: "It's silky on the skin with no white residue," says Jane Yoo, MD, a board-certified dermatologist based in New York City. Our testers agree, with one even describing it as feeling like "nothing" on skin (in the best way). And while it doesn't have quite the same dewiness as the brand’s UVAir serum, that's actually a plus if you prefer a more natural-looking finish.

"La Roche-Posay does it again. I love sunscreens that are on the more fluid side—think serum-like textures—and the Anthelios UVDefense SPF 50 Sunscreen with BEMT clearly falls under that umbrella! Like everyone in the beauty world, I'm ecstatic about a new UV filter, but I'm also hoping *taps watch* that the next approval doesn't take another 36 years. (We need to keep up with our global counterparts who are light-years ahead!!) Anyway, back to this formula. It's so lightweight and elegant that it practically disappears on contact, especially when you're applying two finger lengths' worth (the standard guideline). I was a little extra for this particular demo and used three fingers, so it did take a beat longer to fully rub in. Either way, the formula feels like nothing on the skin—and outside of the depths of winter—my combo skin and I don't need a standalone moisturizer because this doubles as both! The finish is definitely not as glowy as the UVAir serum, but these days, I kind of prefer a more ‘natural’ and ‘balanced’ look." —Sarah Han, commerce editor

Why it’s worth it: Revision Skincare's Intellishade Original SPF 45 is just as much a moisturizer as it is a sunscreen—and once you use it, you'll understand why. The tinted hybrid formula combines mineral UV filters (titanium dioxide and zinc oxide) with chemical ones (octinoxate and octisalate) for broad-spectrum protection, offering a lighter feel and less noticeable white cast than many traditional all-mineral sunscreens.

But the benefits go well beyond sun protection. “Hydrating ingredients like glycerin and squalane deeply comfort skin, along with antioxidants including THD ascorbate, vitamin E, and green tea," says Marisa Garshick, MD, a board-certified dermatologist based in New York City. (If you didn't know, THD ascorbate is a highly stable version of vitamin C that's great for sensitive skin.) She adds that the peptide blend "also makes it great for mature skin looking to address the appearance of fine lines and uneven tone while protecting against further environmental damage." Think of it as a moisturizer, skin tint, and sunscreen in one—which helps make it worth the splurge.

“I’m a sucker for a tinted sunscreen, since I prefer a multipurpose product that I can slap on while my kids are yelling for me. While I’m loyal to Isdin’s Eryfotona Ageless in the summer, I’ve been loving Revision’s tinted formula for the cooler weather, since it feels more hydrating and leaves my skin with a dewy finish. Plus, the tint has more coverage than Isdin’s, so I feel like I can more easily skip foundation when I’m breaking out or dealing with dark spots. Off the bat, the color seemed a little light for my skin tone, but it blended in really nicely and adapted—I was both surprised and impressed!” —Deanna Pai, contributing commerce editor

Why it’s worth it: If you have combination skin, you know the struggle of finding a sunscreen that hydrates dry patches without making your T-zone even shinier. Mediheal's Madecassoside Moisture Sun Serum SPF 50+ PA++++ strikes a nice balance, with a non-sticky texture that feels more like one of your favorite lightweight Korean serums than traditional sunscreen.

Several forms of hyaluronic acid draw in moisture, while niacinamide helps regulate oil production and improve uneven tone. For skin prone to redness or irritation, there's also the brand’s 4-TECA, a blend of four compounds—madecassoside, asiaticoside, madecassic acid, and asiatic acid—derived from Centella asiatica (a.k.a. cica), a K-beauty staple known for its soothing, skin barrier-supporting benefits.

“I first spotted this in an Olive Young store in Seoul and regretted not picking one up! While that means I can't compare the Korean and US versions, I can vouch for how good the latter is! K-beauty has really nailed the concept of serum sunscreens—my all-time favorite is actually called a sun ampoule—which are just as lightweight as they sound. Like serums, these formulas are definitely on the fluid side, which is why they absorb oh so quickly into your skin and feel like nothing from the moment they touch your skin. This one in particular is incredibly calming: It doesn't just have cica, but six types of the super-soother, and niacinamide helps brighten my morning dullness. The nozzle is also very slim, which helps the liquidy formula dispense more precisely onto my fingers without running everywhere. (However, I'd suggest not dawdling during application!) Overall, I highly recommend the Madecassoside Moisture Sun Serum to anyone who's ever complained about how heavy sunscreens feel—basically everyone?” —Sarah Han, commerce editor

“My skin is dehydrated year-round, so all of my face products need to be hydrating. This one delivers, creating that satisfying "squish" as I massage it in. It feels like a moisturizer and absorbs within seconds of application. It acts as a fantastic base for makeup—smoothing dry patches and never pilling under my skin tints or liquid foundations. I use it every day on my face, neck, and on and behind my ears. I even gave it to my dad to try, and he said the formula feels like a regular facial moisturizer, which is a big plus for someone hesitant to use sunscreen daily.” —Jesa Marie Calaor, senior beauty editor

(There's nothing worse than being mid-workout, trying to blink out the sting from the SPF sweat.) It also layers well under… everything. Foundation? Yep. Copious amount of liquid blush? Also yes. It never pills and isn't greasy or sticky, and most importantly, it doesn't irritate my easily inflamed skin. A true win!” —Sarah Kinonen, beauty director

Why it’s worth it: Reapplying sunscreen every two hours sounds straightforward enough until you've already spent time doing your makeup. Abib's Airy Sunstick SPF 50+ makes touch-ups less messy, thanks to its wide, curved applicator that hugs your face's contours and lets you swipe across larger areas. While any sunscreen stick can shift your foundation or blush a bit, this one's smooth, almost primer-like texture helps minimize tugging. The chemical formula also contains silica and silicone powders to absorb excess oil and blur shine—a nice bonus for shiny T-zones. And in true K-beauty fashion, the skin-care benefits don't end there: Ectoin and allantoin help soothe skin and support its moisture barrier, while camellia seed oil and sunflower seed-derived ingredients add a nourishing touch so the semi-matte finish doesn't look chalky.

“I'm on a journey of training myself to reapply sunscreen more often. I used to detest sunscreen sticks, but for the days I wear makeup (which is often), I'm giving them a shot. (Sprays aren't my thing, partially because I'm afraid they'll sting my eyes, and I haven't found an elegant enough SPF cushion yet.) For sticks, Abib's comes out on top so far, largely due to its wide, curved applicator. It hugs the contours of my cheeks, forehead, and chin, unlike other 'straight' bars, which makes application that much more pleasant/seamless. It's also clear from the very start, so I don't need any additional rubbing—no hands, ma! It does leave me a little dewier than before—especially since I do multiple passes per face area, which is vital when it comes to getting adequate protection from sticks—but not up to a point where I mind.” —Sarah Han, commerce editor

Why it's worth it: When you want to even out your complexion but don't feel like wearing a full face of makeup, EltaMD’s UV Clear Tinted SPF 46 strikes the perfect balance. “EltaMD was one of the earliest brands to incorporate iron oxides in its tinted sunscreen formulation,” says Erin Kil, MD, a board-certified dermatologist based in New York City. “Iron oxides, which are found in tinted sunscreens, help block visible light, a known trigger for melasma, particularly in medium to deeper skin tones," adds Asmi Berry, DO, a board-certified dermatologist based in Glendale, California. Plus, the sheer tint subtly blurs redness and discoloration without looking heavy or masking your skin. "The natural-looking tint, combined with niacinamide, makes this a great option for those prone to hyperpigmentation, helping to even out skin tone," says Dr. Rimtepathip.

Technically, it's a hybrid sunscreen, pairing 9% zinc oxide with 7.5% octinoxate—a combination that can be especially appealing for those who want the gentle, sensitive skin-friendly benefits of mineral SPF with a lighter feel and less risk of a white cast. The formula also features hyaluronic acid to boost hydration, vitamin E to defend against free radicals, and lactic acid for gentle skin-smoothing benefits. Since “it's fragrance-free, dye-free, and oil-free, it's also well-suited for acne-prone skin,” says Dr. Rimtepathip.

I love that it doesn’t transfer onto my clothes or hands (I chronically touch my face), and best of all, it hasn’t clogged my pores or caused any breakouts, like other sunscreens I’ve tested.” —Jailynn Taylor, contributor

Supergoop’s Unseen Sunscreen SPF 50 is a fragrance-free formula that’s free of both, making it a gentler option for those who typically struggle with chemical SPF. The invisible formula melts into skin and “has a similar texture to a velvety makeup primer, smoothing over pores and helping complexion products layer with ease,” says Dr. Rimtepathip. There’s also soothing chamomile-derived bisabolol and licorice root to calm redness and support a more even-looking complexion, while meadowfoam seed oil reinforces the skin barrier by locking in moisture. Just keep in mind that because the formula goes on completely clear with a matte finish, it can be easy to miss spots—so don't be shy about applying generously.

He has oily skin, I have dry/sensitive skin, yet the primer-like, semi-matte formula works great for both of us. It glides on completely clear, feels weightless, and has a cushiony gel texture that dries down to a soft, almost powder-like finish. The only slight drawback is that because it's totally invisible, it can be hard to tell whether you've covered every inch of your face. Frequently Asked Questions

    What is a chemical sunscreen?

Chemical sunscreens use chemical UV filters that actually sink into skin, where they absorb ultraviolet radiation and convert it into heat that is then released from the skin, explains Dr. Kil. “Common chemical sunscreen ingredients include avobenzone, oxybenzone, octisalate, octocrylene, and homosalate,” she says. More recently, newer FDA-approved filters such as bemotrizinol (also known as BEMT or Tinosorb S)—which have long been used in Europe and other countries—have begun making their way into the U.S. market, marking “an exciting advancement for sunscreen innovation,” says Whitney Hovenic, MD, a board-certified dermatologist based in Reno, Nevada.

Because these filters are designed to blend into the skin, chemical sunscreens often have a lightweight, elegant finish that makes them especially appealing for everyday use and wear well under makeup.

What's the difference between chemical and mineral sunscreen?

The biggest difference between chemical and mineral sunscreen comes down to how they protect your skin from UV rays. “Chemical sunscreens rely on organic filters that absorb UV rays and dissipate their energy as heat,” says Dr. Kil. Mineral sunscreens, also known as physical sunscreens, use zinc oxide and titanium dioxide to create a protective barrier on the skin's surface; these mineral filters absorb UV radiation and also reflect and scatter a portion of incoming rays.

In general, because they’re absorbed by skin, chemical sunscreens tend to blend more easily and are less likely to leave a visible residue, while mineral sunscreens are often preferred for sensitive skin because they are less likely to irritate. In the US, many chemical sunscreen formulations provide excellent UVB protection, and avobenzone remains the primary filter approved for UVA1 (the long-wave UVA rays that penetrate deepest into the skin and are most closely linked to premature aging and pigmentation) coverage.

    Are chemical sunscreens safe?

While studies have shown that chemical sunscreen ingredients can be detected in the bloodstream after repeated application, “there is no evidence of adverse side effects from these filters,” and to date, there is no evidence that approved chemical sunscreen filters cause adverse health effects when used as directed, says Dr. Kil. Dermatologists continue to recommend sunscreen as one of the most effective tools for preventing skin cancer, premature aging, and sun-induced hyperpigmentation. As with any skin-care product, the best broad-spectrum sunscreen is ultimately the one you'll wear consistently every day.

Are chemical sunscreens "bad" for sensitive skin?

Not necessarily, but some people with sensitive skin may find certain chemical sunscreen ingredients irritating. “Chemical sunscreens contain known allergens, such as oxybenzone, a commonly used filter,” says Dr. Kil. In addition, some formulas contain propylene glycol, a humectant that helps sunscreens absorb into the skin but can trigger skin irritation in certain individuals. That said, not all chemical sunscreens are created equal: Many newer formulas are free of common irritants like oxybenzone, fragrance, and propylene glycol, making them better tolerated by sensitive skin. If your skin is especially reactive, patch-testing a new sunscreen before applying it to your entire face is always a good idea.

How we test and review products

When Allure tests a product, our editors look at it from every angle in an effort to best serve you. We review ingredients, scrutinize brand claims, and, when necessary, examine peer-reviewed scientific and medical studies. In addition to testing each and every product that's included in each and every review, we rely on experts who shape their fields, including dermatology, cosmetic chemistry, and medicine, to help us vet the ingredients and formulas.

For our list of the best chemical sunscreens, we considered each product's performance across five primary categories: product ingredients and efficacy, packaging, fragrance, texture, and product wear. Every product was determined to have excelled in each category by our editorial team, which is composed of in-house writers and editors as well as contributors—along with special consideration from dermatologists. To learn more information on our reporting and testing processes, read our complete reviews process and methodology page.

    Our staff and testers

A beauty product is a personal purchase. You might be searching for a face cream to address persistent dryness or a new nail product to add to your Sunday self-care routine; you may simply be browsing around for the latest launches to hit the hair market. No matter what you seek or your individual needs and concerns, Allure wants to ensure that you love anything we recommend in our stories. We believe that having a diverse team of writers and editors—in addition to the wide range of outside testers and industry experts we regularly call upon—is essential to reaching that goal.

After all, can we really say a skin-care product is the "best" for people over 50 if the only testers we've solicited opinions from folks who have yet to hit 30? Can we honestly deem a high-end diffuser worthy of your hard-earned cash if it's never been tested on curls? We're proud that our staff spans a wide range of ages, skin tones, hair textures, genders, and backgrounds, which means that we are able to fairly assess any beauty product that comes into the beauty closet.

Being an It girl isn’t just photo shoots, brunch at that place where no one else can get a reservation, fashion week pap walks, and bottle service at the club. This status also means knowing when to put on your fuzziest socks and keep it low-key (cool girls enjoy a Grey’s Anatomy marathon too). So, when winter rolls around and a minidress isn't insulated enough for your taste, you can skip the red carpet and opt for a dazzling pedicure instead.

A shape-shifting multichrome black gives darkened club vibes, like sweating on a dance floor lit by a disco ball and vibrant blue laser lights. Deep, rich oxblood gives classic winter reds a gothic femme-fatale upgrade. Shimmery champagne-hued toes evoke the glass of bubbly you’d have at that Metropolitan Opera gala where you simply must make an appearance at. And deep sapphire gives the kind of counterculture cool girl who skips the gala hobnobbing for popping bottles with friends and stirring up good trouble around the town.

Espresso brown is a deeper, sexier take on nudes for winter, while plum makes for an elegant pedicure that feels unexpected. And, to really throw everyone for a loop, ditch the heavy winter hues for ballerina pink, even adding a holographic finish if that ballerina has a rebellious streak.

With these trending, edgier pedicure colors, the party will come to you (and your fuzzy socks, as the case may be). Below, our experts break down the colors to keep handy this season.

If you could bottle a nightclub—the kind where you might find Charli XCX and Troye Sivan swapping spots at the DJ booth—it would be this shape-shifting multichrome black. It’s dark and unbothered, ideal for the dance floor and kissing a stranger.

Much like the clubgoer, it’s hard to pin down this iridescent pedicure. “I love a color that you can’t immediately figure out,” says New York City-based nail artist Elle Gerstein. “That blackened, moody base with a shift that changes depending on the light—that’s exactly where I think winter pedicures are going.”

For an allover prismatic shimmer, try China Glaze Shadow Banned or Cirque Colors Alter Ego. A striking “triochrome” effect would also catch the light and shape-shift on any dance floor—a gunmetal black meets orange and then red in ILNP Orbit for something with a warm cast, or the cool black-blue-purple of Londontown Lakur Skyline Reflect.

Classic red is all fine and good, but this winter, we want something with a little more bite. This sexy oxblood red is less Hallmark rom-com, more vampire novel—gothic, edgy, and a little intoxicating. “It gives drama without being costume-y,” says Tucson-based nail artist Max Estrada.

Finding the right shade of oxblood for your pedicure is key. Blue-based burgundy, like Holo Taco Devils Advocate or Nails Inc It’s Topless, “tends to work well with cool undertones,” says New York City-based nail artist Sandra Wei. Warmer oxblood shades, like Chanel Rouge Noir or Lippmann Single Ladies, “are especially flattering on warm and olive undertones.”

It is frowned upon to dip your toes in an actual glass of Veuve Clicquot, so what’s the next best thing? An effervescent, pearly pedicure that’s perfect for party season. The secret to capturing tiny bubbles in polish is a touch of sparkle. “Metallics and shimmer continue to accompany eveningwear and accessories, so this is a very wearable way to bring that fashion texture into the pedicure,” Estrada says.

Adds Los Angeles-based nail artist Vikki Swan, “An icy pearl works especially well on fair or cool skin, while champagne and warmer beige pearl tones are beautiful on warm, olive, and deeper skin tones.”

For the former, try OPI Candied Cutie. A warmer champagne, like Le Mini Macaron Satin Pearl, gives the beige-gold color of champagne with an allover metallic, as opposed to flecks of bubbly glitter. And if you prefer pink champagne, ORLY Let’s Get Fizzicle and Dazzle Dry Wink Wink have just a tinge of rosiness.

Diamonds may be a girl’s best friend, but sapphires—they’re like your way cooler friend who stays out late and can shoot pool with the best of them. For winter, the darker, moodier sapphires are preferred. “A deep navy or blue-black with a glossy lacquered finish,” Estrada says. “Think sapphire at midnight, not bright cobalt.”

He adds that “deep blue works naturally with denim, navy tailoring, silver hardware, and the cool-toned evening palette often seen in New York and Paris. It reads graphic in daylight and is almost black at night.”

For true inky blue options, Cracked Crowfriend and Habit Deep Sea are creamy, deep shades. For true gemstone sparkle, Apres Milky Way Galaxy and CND Midnight Swim offer a shimmery finish.

A hot espresso doesn’t sound as appealing in the sweaty days of summer, of course. But in the winter, when we’re struggling to wake up in the dark and stay warm during the day? An itty-bitty cup of heaven.

A deep brown pedicure is an ode to that toasty pick-me-up and suits the deeper palette of winter. “For skin tones, warm chocolate browns look especially beautiful on warm- and olive-[toned] skin, while cooler cocoa or espresso shades work well with cool undertones,” says Beverly Hills-based nail artist Viktoriia Voloshyna.

Butter London Boozy Chocolate is a warm chestnut hue, while Sally Hansen Been There, Dune That is a true milk chocolate. Kiara Sky Barely Made It is a cooler cocoa shade, and Townhouse Hot Chocolate is perfect if you like to take the edge off your espresso with a dash of cream.

Swan expects her clients to request deep plum pedicures this winter. “[It’s] very seasonal, but fits the current shift toward more polished, sophisticated nail looks,” she says. This elegant purple is the equivalent of buying a classic Max Mara trench in mulberry instead of tan—streamlined and simple, but with a wink.

Plum has an entire spectrum of iterations—and your chosen pedicure hue depends on the vibe you’re going for. Olive and June Plum for a muted look. Zoya Tara for something a little brighter and spicier. Or Clinique Black Honey and Hermes Violet by Zantin, for a rich, velvety deep plum.

The ballet just hits different in winter. A swan princess is all the more stunning with snow lacing her baby pink tutu. “This is actually one of my favorite directions for winter 2026 because a sheer ballet pink can feel more unexpected right now than another (red) pedicure,” says Gerstein.

It also doesn’t have to be as buttoned-up as an evening at Lincoln Center. While MiniLuxe Prima Donna and Nailberry Candy Floss scratch that tried-and-true itch, Gucci Ellen Blush is a lively apricot take on ballet pink. Or try Essie Frost Yourself for a modern, iridescent look.

Whether or not you’ve actually used the term “protective hairstyle,” if you have tightly curled or coily hair, there’s a very good chance you’ve worn one. Those plaits with the ball hair ties you wore on your first day of kindergarten? A protective hairstyle. Those Scary Spice-inspired Bantu knots you rocked in high school? Protective. The goddess braids you just copied from Pinterest? You guessed it.

What do these various looks have in common? Simply put, they keep you (and the environment) from messing with your hair. Protective hairstyles are “designed to protect the hair from damage, over-manipulation, heat, environmental stressors, and anything that can cause damage to the hair shaft,” says Cataanda James, a New York-based cosmetologist and curly hair expert. Since the scalp’s natural oils have a harder time traveling down the strands to fortify them, curly and coily hair types are more fragile and prone to damage. By minimizing manipulation, you reduce friction and, by extension, breakage. Thus, “your natural hair can retain length and stay healthy,” says Kia Harper, a professional braider based in California.

Pretty much any style that swaddles your natural hair can be considered protective; among the many cited by the experts are braids, twists, locs, crochet styles, sew-ins, Bantu knots, and wigs. “Even a tucked bun can be protective,” notes Rashuna Durham, a professional hairstylist based in Binghamton, New York. That said, a few overarching categories dominate the protective hair space. Keep reading to learn more about them.

The most popular types of protective styles

“Braids are typically formed with three or more sections of hair,” says James, and these sections are woven over and around one another. Arguably the poster child for protective styles, braids are beloved for their versatility: “Many braided styles can also be restyled into buns, ponytails, or updos, giving people several looks from one installation,” says Ladosha Wright, an Ohio-based professional hairstylist. They’re also fan faves for how long you can keep them in (some styles last well over a month) and how easily they give you the option to add fullness and length with added hair.

When it comes to braids, the options seem endless. Some of the most popular include cornrows, which are braided very closely to the scalp, often in straight lines (hence the name); Fulani-inspired styles, which are cornrowed in the front before cascading into loose plaits down the back; and box braids. Falling under the umbrella of box braids are knotless braids, including the trendy goddess and boho styles. These braids—in which the added hair is gradually fed into the plait, as opposed to being tied in at the base via a knot—“are especially popular because they can create a lighter, more flexible feel when installed properly,” says Durham.

“Twists are typically created by wrapping two sections of hair around each other,” says Durham.

While they don’t get quite as much recognition as their three-section counterparts, don’t sleep on this trusty look: “With or without added hair, twists offer a natural-looking, versatile style,” says Wright. Classic two-strand twists—in which the hair is sectioned, wrapped around itself, and hangs down in plaits—are easy to DIY and kind of the protective-style equivalent of a BOGO: “You can wear the twist and then eventually wear a twist-out and get a two-in-one style,” says Mateo Kirkpatrick, a hairstylist based in Dallas.

Along with the classic two-strand twist, popular extension-free twist styles include flat twists (which sit close to the scalp, similar to cornrows) and mini twists, which use very small sections of hair. “When hair is added, Senegalese, passion, and Marley twists are the popular options,” says Wright.

LocsAlice Diop with locs at the Venice International Film FestivalPhoto: Getty ImagesTati Gabrielle with blonde locs on the red carpet.Photo: Getty ImagesA model with locs backstage at Paris Fashion WeekPhoto: Getty ImagesLisa Bonet with locs at a Tom Ford fashion show.Photo: Getty Images

Locs are created “as sections of hair intentionally intertwine and form together over time,” explains Durham. There are several ways to start a loc journey; one includes booking a comb coil appointment with a loctician. With this method, the stylist sections the clean, gelled hair based on hair density and preferred parting; then, they’ll use a tapered barber comb to coil each section. “Place the client under a hooded dryer for 30–45 minutes, applying spritz for the final 15–20 minutes to set the style,” says Wright. “Once the hair is completely dry, voilà! The loc journey begins.”

You can also twist your hair and leave it be (semi free-form) or allow your loose hair to just start loc’ing on its own (free-form). Regardless of the method you choose, if you have naturally coily hair, the mechanics will remain the same: Your hair will continue to loc upon itself as it grows.

Go-to loc styles include wicks, Sisterlocks, and microlocs, says Durham. For those who aren’t ready to fully commit to locs—which require much more time and effort to remove than most protective styles—“faux and soft locs offer a temporary way to achieve a similar look without permanently locking the natural hair,” she adds.

Bantu knotsProtective Hairstyles Bantu KnotsPhoto: Getty ImagesProtective Hairstyles Bantu KnotsPhoto: Getty Images

Named after the Bantu people of Sub-Saharan Africa, Bantu knots are buns created by hair that is tightly (but not too tightly!) wound upon itself. After the hair is parted into sections, each section is twisted or braided. Those twists or braids are then wrapped up into buns. They can be small, medium, or large, and can be done on natural hair or with extensions.

While Bantu knots look fun and funky enough on their own, much like two-strand twists, they’re particularly beloved for providing two hairstyles for the price of one: Once you unravel them, you’re left with defined texture. As hairstylist Monae Everett previously told Allure, they’re “a great way to create heatless waves or preserve your curls overnight.”

Weaves and wigsRyan Destiny at Oscars 2026Photo: Getty Imagesdoja cat with platinum blonde hairPhoto: Getty Images

“A weave is a protective style that interlocks, attaches, connects, or weaves in extension hair, usually human, to natural hair in some form or fashion,” explains James. There are myriad ways to install weaves and extensions, but the most popular for those with coily hair is the sew-in method, wherein the natural hair is cornrowed, and the extension hair is (you guessed it) sewn into the braids. “From my experience, a sew-in is the most protective way to add length and fullness to one’s hair,” she continues. “Since the natural hair is braided and totally tucked away and secured under the weave, it’s the least exposed.”

Wigs (including partial styles, half wigs, and full wigs) can also be considered protective styles —as long as you aren’t wearing them for too long. “Full wigs that cover the entire head, scalp and hair included, block oxygen and nutrients to the follicle,” which eventually impacts hair growth, says James. So, while wigs “count,” so to speak, as long as you’re removing them “daily or periodically,” weaves are the superior longer-term option.

Is there anyone who should avoid (or be mindful of) protective styles?

As great as protective styles are, they aren’t necessarily for everyone. If your hair is fragile or damaged, “focus on healthy hair growth first, rather than protective styling,” says Jeanine Downie, MD, a board-certified dermatologist based in Montclair, New Jersey. She also suggests skipping these styles if you’re at risk for, or have a history of, traction alopecia. Additionally, “anyone with seborrheic dermatitis, eczema, or other conditions needs to be careful not to trigger a flare-up.”

Speaking of skin conditions, “the chemicals in some synthetics can irritate healthy skin,” says Dr. Downie; so, if you plan on adding length or fullness and your skin tends to be on the sensitive side, consider investing in human hair.

    Potential downsides to protective styles

Across protective styles (and experts), two big potential drawbacks are continually cited: tension and product buildup. “Excessive tension, heavy extensions, product buildup, and improper takedown can all lead to breakage, thinning, and scalp irritation,” says Harper.

Tension is no joke. If your style is too tight or too heavy, it can cause “severe traction on the scalp, disrupting the normal hair-growth cycle and ultimately causing irreversible scarring and permanent damage to the follicle,” explains Dr. Downie.

How exactly do you know if a style is too tight? She says you can literally see the signs; for example, “small bumps, red or white, at the base [of the braids] can be a clear indicator of an adverse reaction and the follicle being inflamed.” They might also just… feel too tight. “Even dull pain is a sign,” says Dr. Downie. Harper concurs: “I always emphasize that your hair shouldn’t hurt when you’re getting it done.”

As for product buildup, remember that a protective style isn’t carte blanche to get lax with your cleansing routine. Dr. Downie recommends washing and conditioning your hair frequently (ideally once a week), and using a detoxifying shampoo. I suggest Ouai’s Clarifying Detox Shampoo, which is formulated with apple-cider vinegar and chelating agents that remove impurities. It leaves my hair feeling spick-and-span, but never stripped or too dry (and gets bonus points for the dreamy fruit-floral smell).

With most braid and twist styles, shampooing and conditioning is relatively simple since you have access to your scalp. That said, “not everyone is savvy enough to shampoo their hair without disturbing the braids or pattern,” notes James, “in which case, I recommend using scalp sprays and braid sprays, which are designed and tested to address many of the hair concerns of protective styles.” Cécred’s Scalp Refresher Spray features a blend of ferments that dissolve buildup; this product also has some of the more ingenious packaging I’ve ever encountered, with a slim spray nozzle that gets right into braids without disrupting the style.

Post-wash, Dr. Downie suggests eschewing “super heavy, occlusive waxes; instead, opt for lightweight, fragrance-free, more soluble oils.” Consider jojoba, the main ingredient in Pattern’s Jojoba Hair & Scalp Oil Blend.

The experts also stress prompt removal and proper takedown (consult with your stylist if you’re unsure what that looks like for your style). “It’s important to give your hair a break between installations and make sure you’re taking care of your natural hair underneath,” says Harper. “At the end of the day, a protective style should protect your hair, not compromise its health.”

Our ultimate skin-care tip will always be daily sunscreen application, regardless of your age, skin type, or season. The best sunscreens for mature skin, however, offer more than just sun protection (with broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher, as always), thanks to nourishing ingredients—like niacinamide, ceramides, and hyaluronic acid—that help hydrate skin, support a weakening barrier, and soften the appearance of fine lines, sun spots, and beyond. Think of them as your daily defense, with a few complexion-boosting perks thrown in.

We celebrate aging in all of its forms, but we also believe in investing in your skin care. After all, protecting your skin and giving it a little extra TLC go hand in hand. Below, we asked editors and board-certified dermatologists to break down formulas that particularly work well with mature skin and won't accentuate anything you'd prefer not to shine a spotlight on.

Why it's worth it: We’ll be the first to admit that mineral sunscreen has a questionable reputation—most formulas provide great protection and less-than-great wearability—but SkinCeuticals’ Future Mineral UV Defense Sunscreen SPF 50 is a Best of Beauty winner that’s absolutely worth reaching for—especially for anyone who’s struggled to find a mineral SPF that doesn’t leave a white cast. Yes, you’re getting that reliable broad-spectrum coverage from 15% zinc oxide (plus titanium dioxide), but the difference is in how it shows up on skin: They’re using a specific type of zinc oxide called Z-Cote, which is a microfine version with much smaller particles that’s designed to look more transparent on skin, a.k.a. the reason this formula can blend in so sheer on many complexions.

Beyond UV protection, it relies on tried-and-true skin-care staples that are helpful for mature skin. Niacinamide and panthenol support the barrier, calm visible redness, and even out tone—while the lightweight, almost serum-like texture layers seamlessly without pilling or feeling heavy. “This is great for mature skin since it integrates actives to improve the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles, and discoloration,” says Jane Yoo, MD, a dual board-certified dermatologist based in New York City. It’s so seamless to apply, you might actually catch yourself reapplying without a second thought—which, when it comes to sunscreen, is kind of the whole point.

“I had a true wait, this is mineral? moment with SkinCeuticals’ Future Mineral UV Defense Sunscreen SPF 50. It pours out like a lightweight serum—slightly opaque at first, then it disappears completely into my skin without a trace. True to form, the brand packs in plenty of nourishing skin-care ingredients, and makeup layers over it effortlessly. Now I just need this in a body lotion version.” —Christa Joanna Lee, contributing commerce writer

Why it’s worth it: Some chemical sunscreens can ruffle sensitive skin, but Peach & Lily’s Beam Blocker Invisible Sunscreen instantly won over Allure editors with its nongreasy, non-pilling, and barely-there finish—earning it a 2026 Best of Beauty Award.

We all know sunscreen is a vital skin-care step for delaying signs of aging, but this formula reaches beyond UV protection to deeply nourish skin with hyaluronic acid, squalane, and ceramides, so you’re getting a dose of rich moisture alongside your SPF—enough that you can probably skip your morning face cream altogether—and the much-needed barrier support. (After all, our skin gets drier from moisture loss as we age.) For instance, “since ceramides help repair the skin barrier, they reduce [the look of] signs of aging by improving skin’s elasticity and bounce back,” Corey L. Hartman, MD, a board-certified dermatologist based in Birmingham, Alabama, previously told Allure.

For extra soothing benefits, birch juice, white birch sap, artemisia, and a licorice derivative help calm any visible redness and irritation. Rounding out the formula, a non-comedogenic base helps keep pores clear, while niacinamide “strengthens the skin barrier, reduces redness, minimizes pores, and improves elasticity,” Patrick Davis, MD, a board-certified facial plastic surgeon based in Beverly Hills, California, previously said. In other words, this SPF brings plenty of skin-care benefits to the table, so your daily routine—no matter your age—feels less like a chore.

"I use this sunscreen every day! I was obsessed after the first slathering of this stuff. It's lightweight, easily blendable, and doesn't irritate my eyes, which is a feat for a chemical sunscreen. (There's nothing worse than being mid-workout, trying to blink out the sting from the SPF sweat.) It also layers well under… everything. Foundation? Yep. Copious amounts of liquid blush? Also yes. It never pills and isn't greasy or sticky, and most importantly, it doesn't irritate my easily inflamed skin. A true win!" —Sarah Kinonen, beauty director

Add in squalane, niacinamide, and glycerin, and the barrier-boosting benefits are kicked up a notch—all while melting seamlessly into the rest of your morning ritual.

“Besides the extra two or three seconds it takes to fully rub in, you’d have zero idea there was sunscreen involved in this formula. As a busy mom, I’m all for combining as many steps as possible, and on mornings when I’m rushing out the door, SPF is sometimes the only skin-care step that makes the cut. Luckily, L’Oréal Paris Revitalift Triple Power SPF 30 Face Moisturizer has me covered on the dry skin front as well, and it feels really silky going on. I was surprised to spot a retinol derivative in the formula since I typically reserve retinoids for nighttime because of my sensitive skin, but I didn’t experience any stinging or irritation while testing it.” —Christa Joanna Lee, contributing commerce writer

Why it's worth it: Some sunscreens demand a lot of rubbing; this one melts into skin on contact. Our tester described Chanel’s UV Essentiel as “beautifully ribbony,” and that silky, glide-on texture is a big part of what makes it especially flattering on mature skin. There’s the protection itself—a full lineup of chemical filters doing the heavy lifting against UV damage—but it’s everything layered around it that really sets this formula apart.

Hydrators like glycerin and sodium hyaluronate team up with cushiony emollients—think squalane, moringa oil, and camellia seed oil—so it smooths over dryness instead of clinging to it. Antioxidants like blue ginger and licorice add a layer of defense against pollution and oxidative stress that accelerate the signs of aging. It leaves behind a soft, slightly luminous finish that blurs rather than emphasizes texture, and it layers nicely under foundation and other makeup without pilling or settling into fine lines, so you never have to worry about your SPF messing up your hard work.

It's also chemical sunscreen, so there's no hint of white cast. It wears so well under makeup and does not pill, whether I use a skin tint or actual foundation. It's elegance and performance in one little tube.” —Shanna Shipin, senior commerce director

Why it's worth it: If your skin gets shiny by midday, the last thing you’ll want is an SPF that makes matters worse. (After all, Menopause acne is real.) It’s one of the many reasons Allure editors and James Y. Wang, MD, a board-certified dermatologist based in Los Angeles, never stop raving about the Best of Beauty-winning EltaMD UV Clear SPF 46. He calls this mineral-based facial sunscreen “one of the lightest and silkiest skin-care products on the market.”

Its star ingredient, niacinamide, plays an essential role in its complexion-brightening, moisture-replenishing, and sebum-balancing properties. Because acne-prone skin can also be prone to dryness, this formula features hydrating hyaluronic acid to plump skin and "fill in" fine lines. Though it’s ultra-hydrating, this sunscreen’s oil-free, non-comedogenic formulation and inclusion of lactic acid—a skin-tightening and pore-unclogging alpha hydroxy acid that’s gentler than other exfoliating options—mean this shouldn’t clog pores or irritate existing breakouts. Bonus: It's gentle enough (and fragrance-free!) for those with sensitive skin, too.

“As someone with sensitive skin, finding an SPF formula that won't mess with my finicky complexion is super important. This silky white cream seeps into skin seamlessly, without creating more sensitivity (great for my redness-prone cheeks) and doesn't have a scent, which means my underlying eczema is never triggered. It's truly a great sunscreen. I apply it in the morning, after my serums and moisturizer, right before my BB cream and bronzer. Frequently Asked Questions

How does sunscreen benefit mature skin?

On top of preventing issues like skin cancer and sunburn, Margarita Lolis, MD, a board-certified dermatologist based in Hackensack, New Jersey, says applying (and reapplying) a broad-spectrum sunscreen will minimize the appearance of concerns like fine lines, sun spots, and decreased skin laxity. "Unprotected sun exposure drastically accelerates the appearance of aging skin," Dr. Lolis explains. "While mature skin is already experiencing these effects absent sun exposure, not protecting your skin with sunscreen daily only sends the aging process into hyperdrive," she adds.

What ingredients should I look for in sunscreen for mature skin?

You'll want to look for a sunscreen formulated with antioxidants, the top-tier one being a stabilized form of vitamin C. This is because antioxidants neutralize environmental aggressors, including pollution, infrared rays, and visible light; therefore, they boost the efficacy of your sunscreen's protective measures. On top of that, studies have shown that when vitamin C is used topically, it can help accelerate the skin's production of collagen and elastin, the protein fibers that help keep skin plump and firm. By promoting collagen production, topical vitamin C can help delay signs of skin aging, including fine lines and reduced elasticity.

Another antioxidant known for its skin-boosting benefits is niacinamide, also known as vitamin B3. Like its counterpart, vitamin C, niacinamide has a myriad of benefits, including evening tone, brightening your complexion, and minimizing the appearance of pores. Dr. Garshick previously told Allure that this antioxidant can also diminish fine lines and wrinkles, thanks to its collagen-boosting properties. Most of the formulas above are also spiked with other plumping additives, like hydrating hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and ceramides, that we’ll never say no to.

What Is Blonde Balayage? Everything You Need to Know About the Low-Maintenance Highlights

Five examples of blonde balayagePhotos: Getty ImagesSave StorySave this storySave StorySave this story

There are plenty of ways to become a blonde, but if your dream color is hair that looks naturally lightened, you’ll want to ask your colorist for blonde balayage. The technique has become synonymous with soft, dimensional color and a forgiving grow-out, but “balayage” can mean different things depending on the colorist, the starting point, and the result you want.

It also doesn’t automatically mean a subtle, barely there blonde. “People often associate balayage with ombré or muted blondes,” says Emaly Baum, colorist and founder of Beauty Supply in New York City. “While you use balayage to achieve softened blondes or more ‘grown-out’ looks, balayage is simply a technique.” That means you can go seriously blonde with balayage. It’s the placement and blending that give the color its characteristic softness.

Abby Haliti, colorist and founder of AH Color Studio in New York City, has watched as more and more clients specifically request blonde balayage over foils. “I believe blonde balayage gained popularity because clients wanted beautiful blonde color while keeping their hair feeling healthy,” she says. “Clients often tell me their hair feels healthier and the grow-out feels softer than with traditional foil highlights.”

Whether you’re starting with dark brown hair and want strategically placed blonde or you’re already fairly light and want a more dimensional result, the service can be customized considerably. We asked colorists to explain what blonde balayage involves, who it works best for, what to request when you’re in the salon chair, and how to keep those blonde pieces looking fresh—not faded or brassy—long after your appointment.

What is balayage, and how is it different from traditional highlights?

Technically, balayage is a highlighting technique, not a hair color. The word has traditionally referred to hair being hand-painted, creating a more customized distribution of lighter pieces. “With balayage, we paint by hand and leave depth underneath,” says Haliti, who adds that the focus is on the surface of the hair. “That lets me follow a consistent pattern and adjust it at each appointment.” But while this is the widely understood approach to balayage, its meaning has evolved over time.

“Balayage originally meant painting highlights directly onto the hair without using foil,” says Ian McCabe, colorist and the owner of Navy in Washington, DC. “In recent years, it has become a catchall term for dimensional highlights that grow out with more ease.” That means modern balayage can involve some foil. According to McCabe, colorists may use foils alongside techniques such as back-combing to create a softer result. A root shadow can also help gradually transition from a slightly darker shade near the roots into lighter lengths, helping blur the line between the natural hair color and blonde highlights.

"The biggest visual difference between traditional blonde highlights and blonde balayage is the way the blonde transitions through the hair. “Traditional highlights are generally evenly light from root to ends, whereas balayage creates more of a gradient effect,” McCabe explains. The goal is a dimensional result with a softer, more seamless grow-out.

“Traditional foil highlights yield more structured, precise results that require more frequent maintenance,” says Haliti. On the other hand, balayage is much softer and more diffused than traditional foil highlights, often creating a sun-kissed appearance. “This doesn’t mean that you can’t be super blonde with balayage,” Baum says. “It just means that your grow-out is going to be that much better.”

Paige Van Ryswyk, a colorist and hairstylist at Scotch Bonnet Hair Studio in West Palm Beach, Florida, agrees that balayage is particularly suited to a lived-in effect, but that it doesn’t rule out a brighter impact. “Blonde balayage is simply best for a more low-maintenance client,” she says.

If you've been avoiding balayage because you think it means you'll end up with barely perceptible beige ribbons, reconsider. Blonde balayage can be very blonde. But if those barely perceptible beige ribbons sound right up your alley, good news: Blonde balayage is also right for you. It’s just that adaptable.

Who is blonde balayage best for?

One of the technique's biggest advantages is flexibility. “Because balayage is so customizable, it’s suitable for most people,” Baum says. It's particularly appealing if you want fewer salon appointments and don't want to see an obvious line of demarcation. “I think the client who is opting for blonde balayage definitely wants an easier grow-out with fewer appointments to maintain their roots,” she says.

And you don't need to start out blonde to benefit from blonde balayage. “It works exceptionally well on brunettes to add dimension and brightness, as well as on red hair to create depth,” Haliti says. The amount of maintenance depends on how dramatic the transformation is. Someone with a dark base who wants a few dimensional blonde pieces has a different journey ahead of them than someone seeking an overall very light blonde effect. Your starting color also affects what blonde tone makes the most sense. “If someone has an incredibly dark base color, a platinum blonde balayage will probably not complement them as well as a bronde dimensional look,” Van Ryswyk says.

That doesn't mean dark-haired clients are excluded from blonde balayage. It just means the consultation should be about finding a blonde tone that works with your existing color rather than treating Pinterest photo inspo as a promise of what you’ll be able to achieve.

How do you get blonde balayage?

Bring photos, but don't just show your colorist a picture and say, “I want this.” Talk through what you actually like about it, and listen when they tell you what is and isn’t feasible. Do you want blonde concentrated around the face? Lighter mid-lengths and ends? A subtle, sunny effect? A bold contrast between your base and blonde? Do you want your natural roots left mostly untouched? These are all factors that will help determine what your colorist will do.

Van Ryswyk says that, regardless of the overall look, the goal is to create enough blending that you don't feel desperate to get back into the salon before your scheduled appointment. For an especially low-maintenance version, your colorist can strategically keep the roots natural. For a brighter result, they may create more lightness and contrast throughout the hair.

There isn't one correct version of blonde balayage; there's the version that fits your hair and your ability to maintain it.

How do you maintain blonde balayage?

Both Haliti and Van Ryswyk recommend booking appointments three to six months out, compared with closer to two months for highlights that start at the scalp. The beauty of balayage is that you can go a long time between appointments “due to the subtle grow-out process,” Haliti says—but your home routine still matters.

All of the colorists we spoke to emphasized the importance of a gentle, color-safe shampoo and a moisturizing conditioner. “I really like the Rōz Foundation Shampoo and Conditioner,” Baum says. “They leave the hair feeling clean and moisturized, but the conditioner is not too heavy.”

Leave-in treatments are also a must—especially those that promise heat protection if you’re not just air-drying. “Always use heat protection when using a blow-dryer or hot tools, and keep your tools set to a lower temperature to avoid burning the hair, which can increase fading or discoloration,” says McCabe, who recommends the Milbon Color Retaining Primer because it also protects hair against UV exposure. For deeper conditioning, he recommends using a mask, like the Davines Nounou Mask, weekly or every other week.

For extra credit, try an at-home gloss—even if it’s just a colorless one. “An at-home hair gloss can be really beneficial for keeping your balayage looking fresh and shiny,” says Baum, who recommends the clear version of Glaze Supergloss to her clients because it restores movement to the highlights. “The shade Vanilla Lights is also a great option to help neutralize brassiness.”

If your skin feels tight, stripped, or otherwise uncomfortable after a shower, it’s a sign it needs a little extra TLC. Luckily, the best body washes for dry skin do more than just rinse away dirt and sweat—they leave your skin feeling softer, smoother, and more hydrated before you even reach for body lotion.

The right formula is often packed with the kind of nourishing ingredients, like shea butter, ceramides, and glycerin, that attract and lock in moisture, so you get clean without the tight, squeaky aftermath (because that never really means your skin is truly clean). And for sensitive or eczema-prone skin, moisturizing cleansers that skip common irritants like dyes and fragrances, and even carry the National Eczema Association’s seal of approval, can offer a gentler cleanse and a little extra relief. A great moisturizing body wash saves you from that dry, itchy post-shower feeling, so you can trust these formulas aren’t your average suds.

Why it’s worth it: If you’ve tried the Best of Beauty-winning OSEA Undaria Body Oil, you know just how lovely and delicious-smelling and skin-softening this formula is. Well, good news: The Undaria Body Wash smells just as good and offers the same level of luxurious formula, just in the form of a foaming cleanser. Like the body oil, this body wash is boosted with undaria seaweed, a natural moisturizer packed with amino acids and antioxidants that replenish the skin’s barrier. The formula also uses glycerin to draw water to the skin and lock it in, as well as plant-based surfactants to gently cleanse—creating a light foam that doesn’t strip the skin. Top it all off with nourishing jojoba and avocado oils, which leave skin feeling silky, hydrated, and supple post-shower.

“I won't lie: The scent is the selling point for me. The grapefruit and lime notes feel like a gentle wake-up call and boost my mood every time I use it. The formula itself is so silky and has the perfect amount of slip, and of course, it's filled with moisturizing powerhouses, like the brand's signature undaria seaweed, aloe, glycerin, and jojoba oil that leave my skin feeling as soft as a baby's bum. Once I'm out of the shower and dried off, I follow up with the Hyaluronic Body Serum because it's one of the few nonsticky body-care products my impatient self tolerates. It's the perfect recipe for long-lasting hydration.” —Sarah Han, commerce editor

Enter the Best of Beauty-winning Dove Serum + Radiance Oil Body Wash, which offers plenty of perks for dry, mature skin, thanks to hydration-heavy glycerin making up 50% of its formula. “It helps cleanse the skin without leaving you with that dry, tight feeling afterward,” says Dara Spearman, MD, a board-certified dermatologist based in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Jojoba seed oil and monoi flower further soften and help replenish the lipids we lose as we age. So even before you slather on moisturizer, this cleanser is giving your skin a head start on hydration—and at just $13.

Why it’s worth it: Fragrance can be tricky for sensitive or dry skin, but Each & Every’s Day Dream Body Wash swaps synthetic perfumes for essential oils and plant extracts that smell just as good as they feel. Its bright citrus scent—which earned it a Best of Beauty Award—springs from orange, lemon peel, and vetiver root oils for an instant mood boost. There’s an Each & Every scent for everyone, whether you prefer something lighter (Sunday Morning, a lavender and lemon scent) or on the sweeter side (After Glow, a raspberry and mandarin scent). While we could talk about scents all day, the formula deserves its own spotlight: Plant-based cleansers work alongside plant oils (macadamia and moringa), glycerin, and ceramides to intensely nourish with every wash. Lactic acid, a gentle alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) exfoliates while also attracting moisture, leaving skin feeling softer and smoother than ever.

"My dry skin was mighty happy after rinsing—I stepped out of the shower with a nice ‘slip’ that signaled to me it drank up the hydrating and exfoliating actives in this formula. To my surprise, the scent lingered in the shower mist and clung to my skin long after—unlike some body washes whose fragrances seem to go straight down the drain. While it wouldn’t be my first choice, its crisp citrus scent is perfect for anyone who prefers something bright and airy—it reminded me of a tall, refreshing glass of orange juice." —Madison San Miguel, commerce editor

Why it’s worth it: Nécessaire’s The Body Wash is a quiet hero in the acne-fighting category. Alabama-based dermatologist Corey L. Hartman, MD, says this non-comedogenic formula—meaning it won’t clog pores—is ideal for oily or acne-prone skin. For instance, it’s packed with niacinamide, which Dr. Hartman says “helps clear active acne, keeps pores clean, and reduces inflammation.” To keep skin happy, glycerin and omega-rich oils—cacay, marula, and meadowfoam—prevent moisture loss and protect the barrier, while plant-based surfactants transform the gel into cloud-like suds (a bonus compared to other acne-targeted cleansers). It does all this while staying at a consistent pH level of 5.5 to 5.6, which New York City-based dermatologist Dendy Engelman, MD, says is ideal for “maintaining skin’s natural pH” (which rings in at 5.5), helping skin feel soothed and never tight.

“I hoard Nécessaire's body washes for one reason: They're good! But the Hinoki is my favorite, especially in the summertime when my skin is peppered with mosquito bites—which inevitably lead to dark spots. The exfoliating acids help them fade more quickly (think weeks, not months) and I love the sheer convenience of having a potent exfoliant and body wash in a single step.” —Deanna Pai, contributing commerce editor

As evidenced by my well-loved bottle, I adore it, but I'd still be hoarding these body washes even if they hadn't added my favorite woody, slightly spicy fragrance to it. It forms a nice, medium lather, and the trio of exfoliating acids—AHA, BHA, and PHA—smooth out rough patches of skin—has definitely made a difference in the KP on my upper arms. Why it’s worth it: Your body wash doesn’t need a script full of cleansing agents to do its job well. Case in point: the Soft Services Comfort Cleanse Ultra Soothing Shower Gel. If your skin flares up at the mere thought of showering, this irritation-relieving formula will immediately put your skin at ease with a simple, short list of ingredients, including two gentle cleansing agents (lauryl glucoside and sodium cocoamphoacetate) to reduce the "squeaky clean” or “tight feel,” to wash away dirt and sweat—minus the fragrance and harsh surfactants (looking at you, sulfates!) that could easily shake up sensitive skin. Glycerin locks in moisture long after you dry off and lends the formula a water-oil texture—silky enough to create for shaving. Bye-bye, razor bumps and dry, irked skin.

The reason why? It stars a soothing blend of lipid-replenishing glycerin and shea butter, anti-inflammatory niacinamide, and the brand’s antioxidant-rich thermal spring water to replenish and protect the moisture barrier. “I used to purchase this in half-gallon bottles and lug it back from City Pharma in Paris for years until it finally came to the States,” Dr. Yoo attests. While it lathers into a light foam, Dr. Yoo says it doesn’t leave behind any tightness. “It’s also fragrance-free and suitable for babies, kids, and adults,” she adds.

“The fragrance-free milky gel removes all traces of my (granted, relatively light) makeup while also leaving my skin softer than it was pre-wash. The second ingredient in the formula is glycerin, a humectant that pulls water from the air to keep skin hydrated for hours. It also includes niacinamide to rebuild the skin’s lipid layer and shea butter to soften. A little dab’ll do ya (dime-size for your face, a couple of quarters for your entire body), and you still get just enough foaminess to tell your brain you’re getting clean. This wash started out in my kids’ bathtub—where it soothed rough patches on my eczema-prone son—before it migrated to my own shower and became my go-to.” —Jenny Bailly, executive beauty director

Why it’s worth it: L’Occitane’s Cleansing & Softening Almond Oil is a favorite of Allure editors past and present. Not only can we sniff its sweet, nutty scent for hours, but it does wonders for relieving dry to very dry skin of that familiar tight and stripped feeling from other cleansers. The experience is satisfying from start to finish: Like a cleansing oil for the face, the formula starts as a thick, silky oil before transforming into a light, sudsy lather when activated by water. A trio of highly moisturizing plant oils— grapeseed, sweet almond, and sunflower seed—delivers a triple dose of moisture without the greasy residue. Hello, deliciously soft and smooth skin.

Pro tip: For extra dry skin, Dr. Engelman recommends pairing a hydrating, non-stripping body wash with a shower oil to seal in moisture immediately afterward.

“Oil and suds usually don’t go together, but L’Occitane’s Almond Shower Oil proves otherwise. It hydrates like an oil without leaving any greasy residue, leaving skin soft, supple, and touchable. Some days, I skip body lotion entirely—it’s that moisturizing. “I’m not super picky about body washes since I don’t have any big flags to address, e.g. acne, psoriasis, etc., which is why I can’t really justify spending (or theoretically spending, thanks to this job) a lot of money on one. I’ve always admired and praised Cocokind, not just because it’s affordable, but because it prioritizes all skin types (including sensitive), community building (Cocokind recruits customers/followers for campaigns, sends them on brand trips over traditional influencers, etc.), and formula transparency. Of course, this face and body wash is just really darn good. It feels far more expensive than it is and leaves my skin feeling soft and soothed well after rinsing. Frequently Asked Questions

What ingredients should I look for in a moisturizing body wash?

Cincinnati-based cosmetic chemist Kelly Dobos recommends looking for ingredients that hydrate and support the skin barrier, like niacinamide (a.k.a. vitamin B3), key for brightening, boosting ceramide production, and delivering antioxidant benefits. "Niacinamide is an ingredient with numerous advantages; as a cosmetic chemist, I love its versatility in formulations," Dobos says. And don’t forget your ceramides, either. New York City-based dermatologist Joshua Zeichner, MD, previously told Allure that they help fill in the cracks between skin cells, thus helping skin repair itself—which makes a huge difference in the feel (and overall health) of dry, irritated skin. Shea butter, jojoba oil, and algae extracts are also top picks for lasting softness, while hyaluronic acid keeps skin hydrated and clear, adds Dr. Engelman.

Synthetic compounds are also crucial to a good body wash—even the ones you can't pronounce. "Combinations of two to three synthetic surfactants are essential for good cleansing and foaming, and increasing mildness. Cocamidopropyl hydroxysultaine and cocamidopropyl betaine are examples of mild secondary surfactants," says Dobos. "One ingredient that is particularly useful in body wash is guar hydroxypropyltrimonium chloride, a conditioning polymer with many positive charges that make it substantive to dry skin,” adds Dobos “It can help deposit other ingredients on the skin too."

What should I avoid in a body wash for dry skin?

While not everyone is sensitive to fragrance in body washes, picking a fragrance-free option minimizes the risk of irritation and, in turn, a weakened barrier and dryness. "Try to avoid fragrances, cleansers with a high pH, or soap-based cleansers," Dr. King attests. She notes that "soap" doesn't always refer to bar soap, but rather cleansers with a high pH. "Skin has a neutral to slightly acidic pH, so you want cleansers that mimic that and support barrier health, Dr. King explains. “If it has tons of ingredients, ditch it. Keep it simple!" It’s a good idea to avoid harsh, skin-stripping detergents like sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), which can strip the skin of its natural oils, leading to more dryness.

If you have eczema, avoid formulas that feature acne-targeting ingredients like salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide, Olga Bunimovich, MD, a board-certified dermatologist based in Pittsburgh, previously told Allure, as they can be particularly drying and irritating. The safest option, however, if you have acne-prone and very dry skin, is to talk to your dermatologist before buying a new body wash.

For our list of the best body washes for dry skin, we considered each product's performance across five primary categories: product ingredients and efficacy, packaging, fragrance (or lack thereof), texture, and product wear. Every product was determined to have excelled in each category by our editorial team, which is composed of in-house writers and editors as well as contributors—along with special consideration from board-certified dermatologists.

The best red lipsticks have a reputation for being high-maintenance, but the right one is as easy to wear as any other color in your makeup bag. And these days, you’ve got options: Some love a high-coverage lipstick—in case you haven’t heard, bold is back—while others want a sheer wash of color. Not only do the finishes, formulas, and payoff vary, but so do the shades. One tip? Choose your red lipstick like you’d pick an outfit. Fiery orange-reds feel warm and playful. Cool blue-reds look sharp and polished, and they can even make your teeth look whiter. A bright, classic red works well for brunch or the office, while deeper brick or wine shades feel moodier and are perfect for evenings. If a bold matte feels like too much, try a sheer balm or a glossy formula for an extra pop.

Why we love it: Plenty of MAC shades have cult followings, but Ruby Woo is a household name at this point. Countless brands have tried to duplicate it, but this blue-red lipstick has long reigned as the industry's gold standard—and a repeat Allure Best of Beauty and Readers’ Choice Award winner. Marking MAC’s 40th anniversary, the updated Macximal Silky Matte 12HR Wear Lipstick keeps the beloved shade, which universally flatters skin and brightens smiles, but upgrades the formula to one that’s more comfortable. It uses coconut oil, organic shea butter, and organic cocoa butter to keep lips soft. The payoff remains full-coverage in a single swipe, setting to a silky, velvety matte finish.

Why we love it: Not everyone wants to commit to a full-wattage red. If that’s the case, the M.ph Lip Ciggy Sheer Lipstick Balm is an easygoing, beginner-friendly option. It offers a sheer, shiny wash of color like a lip balm that builds with each swipe, or you can dab it on for a flushed-lip effect. Along with the color, the formula includes hyaluronic acid, which helps lips hold moisture so they look plumper, and squalane keeps them soft and supple. The texture is slick and smooth, feeling more like a balm than a typical lipstick. Plus, its compact design makes it ideal for on-the-go touch-ups.

Why we love it: Shiny, juicy, and light-catching are all ways to describe the Dear Dahlia Lip Paradise Sensual Lip Glow, which is why it's no surprise it won a 2026 Allure Best of Beauty Award. The lipstick glides on in a glossy, sheer layer and stays comfortable thanks to shea butter and plant-based moisturizing oils like sunflower, castor, jojoba, sweet almond, and argan; together, they cushion lips and smooth the look of fine lines. The formula includes the brand's patented Dahlia variabilis flower extract, which is known for its antioxidant benefits. The red in the line is Chloe, a glossy reddish-orange that brightens lips with a buildable wash of color.

“I was a big fan of the early 2000s matte red lipstick crayon, but as I've gotten older, my lips just need more hydration than those formulas can offer. I've now officially called off my search for a true red lipstick that doesn't make my lips flaky and cracked by the end of the day. This sheer and glossy formula is just what I was looking for. The color is pretty buildable, so I find myself reapplying like I would a lip balm because it feels so comfy and hydrating. But it still lasts through coffee and a non-messy desk meal!” —Alessandra Foresto, managing editor

Why we love it: Maybelline has never needed a high price tag to compete, and the Maybelline New York Serum Lipstick proves that yet again with a 2026 Allure Best of Beauty Award. This lipstick blends hyaluronic acid with marula, moringa, avocado, soybean, sunflower, and jojoba oils to keep your lips moisturized and soft. In practice, it glides on like a balm but lays down rich, opaque color. The satin shades are the standouts, wearing comfortably and fading gracefully throughout the day, even after a meal. The line features three distinct reds: Open Late, a cool berry-red with a matte finish; Wild Card, a bright, classic matte red; and Blind Date, a deep brick-tone red with a satin finish.

“The Maybelline Moisturizing Serum Lipstick in Wild Card formula looks and feels like a lipstick five times the price (and with today's wild luxury beauty market, probably even eight times the price). It glides on fully opaque in just one swipe—there's no need to add layer upon layer to achieve full coverage, and it's great for overlining—without feeling suffocating on your lips. In fact, the formula is ridiculously comfortable to wear; it feels as comfortable and hydrating as a tinted balm, but with the added creamy, velvety feeling you get from the pigment. I like the shade Wild Card because it reminds me of some classic matte red hues from pricier brands. The brand describes it as a mid-tone red, but on me it looks more blue-based than orange-based, which I prefer as it's more complementary to my neutral undertones. The only thing I'll say is it's not indelible (the brand promises eight-hour wear). It will leave a mark on your wine glass or water bottle, and it will move around if you're not careful while eating, which is not really that surprising from a traditional-style lipstick like this.” —Sophia Panych, content director

Why we love it: If you can’t stand a chalky lip that settles into every line and somehow makes your lips look even drier, meet your match. Maed’s Signature Lip Pigment delivers the lasting power of a matte without the typical dryness or weight. The flexible formula moves with your lips, feels practically undetectable, and is packed with hydrators that keep them soft and smooth all day. The star ingredients do the heavy lifting: maca root adds dimension and a subtle glow (no flat, matte finish here), tucuma butter—a natural silicone alternative—locks in moisture and smooths texture, jojoba esters lend that buttery glide, and cherry coffee seed oil helps firm and support elasticity. Basically, it’s a long-wearing lip that feels like a gloss but performs like a liquid lipstick.

And while no liquid lipstick will ever wear as comfortably as my beloved lip tints, Maed’s Signature Lip Pigment comes pretty darn close. The secret? Cherry coffee seed oil, tucuma butter, and jojoba esters for a gosh-darn smooth glide and subtle sheen (that dries totally matte in a few minutes). Its creamy formula sets to a soft, blurred finish that looks smooth and stays hydrated for hours, wearing down evenly rather than fading or flaking in patches. That ease of wear comes down to the thoughtful blend of ingredients: sodium hyaluronate (a form of hyaluronic acid) to draw in and lock in moisture, vitamin E for antioxidant protection, and a run-resistant polymer that creates a flexible layer that keeps the color from fading.

The formula starts as a soft stain and builds to full, saturated color, and feels comfortable no matter how many layers you apply. Antioxidant lipstick tree (Bixa orellana) extract soothes and conditions lips, vitamin E hydrates and smooths, while the "3D glowing pigments" give your lips a fuller, more radiant look, so the matte finish never goes dull. “I usually stay clear of red lipsticks because of the aftermath: the tug-of-war removal with my cleansing balm, pigment settling into my lip lines, and all of the other pains that come with. This formula has converted me back. Though I wouldn't describe it as a true matte, its hydrating base—vitamin E, buttery waxes—helped give it a subtle sheen (which I prefer). One quick swipe delivers rich pigment, while a second layer (or even more) easily builds the intensity without feeling gritty or heavy. That’s exactly why Tom Ford’s Slim Lip Color Shine is a permanent fixture in our makeup bags. Sure, it’s not the longest-wearing formula out there (that glossy finish comes with trade-offs), but it earns its spot as both a luxe lip balm and gloss in one. The chunky crayon makes it easy to swipe on full color in seconds, yet it's precise enough to double as a liner, making it the ultimate multitasker to stash in your bag. Frequently Asked Questions

How do I choose the best red lipstick for my skin tone?

Anyone can wear whatever red lipstick they like, full stop. "The right red is the one that makes you feel good," says Los Angeles-based makeup artist Fiona Stiles, whose clients include Margot Robbie, Gabrielle Union, and Lily Collins.

However, you can expedite finding a red lipstick you love by considering your skin tone and your skin's undertone. New York City-based makeup artist Diane Kendal previously told Allure that red shades with blue undertones give cool-toned, fair-to-light-medium complexions a more radiant appearance and even make teeth look whiter. For warm, medium skin tones, Kendal suggested orange-red shades—"Intense, yes, but they make olive skin glow by bringing out its golden tones," she says. As for deeper skin tones, she recommended red hues "with a lot of pink," which she said works beautifully against dark complexions.

How do you make red lipstick last?

We all love the look of freshly applied lipstick, but after a few hours (or drinks), things can start to look messy. Don't fret, because there are quite a few ways to make your look last for hours on end. Back in the day (2010 to be exact), New York City-based makeup artist Peter Phillips previously gave Allure editors a few tips on ensuring that any lip look stays put—and these hacks are still used by our staff to this day.

Prep your lips: Your results will only be as smooth and seamless as the actual skin on your lips. To smooth your skin pre-lipstick, try using a lip scrub or a damp washcloth to buff dry flakes. "Pat on a clear lip balm and give it a few minutes to sink in, then blot with a tissue," said Phillips.

Use setting powder after applying your lipstick: Makeup artists and Allure editors alike abide by this tip, especially when it comes to smudge-prone shades like red. Phillips recommended dabbing a light amount on the lips to keep your lipstick in place without drying out your skin. "Close your mouth, smile, and then dust a little face powder on your lips with a fluffy brush," he says. “Don't reapply lipstick or it could get cakey.”

If matte lipsticks are too dry for your lips, use a satin-finish option instead: Since many long-wearing lipsticks are matte and can dry out your lips, Phillips prefers satin-finish, pearlescent lipsticks. "The shine is created by pearl pigments and not by the texture. It's not as moist as a creamy lipstick and will therefore stay on longer," he said.

Is there a red lipstick that looks good on everyone?

Both experts agree that anyone can wear a red lip, but no single shade looks the same on everyone, since skin undertone, natural lip color, and finish all change how a red reads. "MAC Ruby Woo is absolutely a classic; that crisp blue-red can be beautiful across a wide range of skin tones," explains Tim Quinn, a makeup artist based in West Palm Beach, Florida. Jalia Pettis, a makeup artist based in Phoenix, Arizona, relies on the range of reds from The Lip Bar and Charlotte Tilbury.

Rather than stick with one go-to shade, both makeup artists switch it up. Choose a liner that matches your lipstick keeps red crisp and helps it last longer, while one closer to your natural lip color softens the edges. You can skip liner altogether with sheer balms and stains, since the point is a blurred, diffused look.

"On one person, a bright blue-red is magic; on another, a warmer red or a deeper, softer shade brings their whole face to life,” says Quinn. He also considers how the shade works with the rest of their makeup, noting that someone who feels overwhelmed by a bold matte lip might love that same look, just in a sheerer texture.

How we test and review products

When Allure tests a product, our editors look at it from every angle in an effort to best serve you. We review ingredients, scrutinize brand claims, and, when necessary, examine peer-reviewed scientific and medical studies. In addition to testing every product that’s included in each and every review, we rely on experts who shape their fields, including dermatology, cosmetic chemistry, and medicine, to help us vet the ingredients and formulas.

For our list of the best red lipsticks, we considered each product’s performance across five primary categories: product ingredients and efficacy, packaging, fragrance, texture, and product wear. Every product was determined to have excelled in each category by our editorial team, which is composed of in-house writers and editors as well as contributors — along with special consideration from makeup artists.

After all, can we really say a skin-care product is the "best" for people over 50 if the only testers we've solicited opinions from are folks who have yet to hit 30? Can we honestly deem a high-end diffuser worthy of your hard-earned cash if it’s never been tested on curls? We're proud that our staff spans a wide range of ages, skin tones, hair textures, genders, and backgrounds, which means that we are able to fairly assess any beauty product that comes into the beauty closet.

If you were a tween in the late 2000s, there's a good chance you spent part of your formative years watching Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato make YouTube videos, giggle their way through interviews, and give Disney Channel fans a friendship to obsess over. And if you've spent the years since hoping for another Delena moment that could make your inner 13-year-old scream into a bedazzled pillow, well, consider this your lucky day. Gomez and Lovato have reunited for a new Rare Beauty campaign, and they're taking us back to their bedroom-vlogging days to launch a makeup bundle arguably decades in the making.

In what Rare Beauty is calling the “Still Making Each Other Blush” campaign, the duo celebrates a friendship that dates back over two decades and the new Delena Soft Pinch Blush Bundle, which includes two shades of the brand's Soft Pinch Liquid Blush and the Soft Pinch Blush Brush.

Selena Gomez Demi Lovato wearing strapless dresses and sitting on a pile of green luggageCourtesy of brand

But the makeup is only half of the fun. In an Instagram Reel promoting the reunion, Gomez and Lovato tap into the energy of their old YouTube vlogs—and the general vibe of that entirely horizontal YouTube era—recreating the casual, camera-facing chemistry that made their friendship so endearing in the first place. It's a little bit beauty campaign, a little bit time capsule. The production values may have improved since 2008, but it’s really the nostalgia that’s doing the heavy lifting here.

    Instagram content

“Being on set together felt like we were back in our old bedrooms making YouTube videos and playing with makeup,” Lovato said in a press release. Gomez was equally sentimental, saying, “Coming together for this campaign was a beautiful reminder of [our] history and a chance to celebrate who we are today. One and the same… always.”

And just like that, we're emotionally invested in a blush launch.

The set launches October 28 at rarebeauty.com for $50, which might have seemed like an unthinkable fortune back when you were dreaming of being a Disney kid. But now? You can spend your grown-up money on it.

Candles have a bad gifting reputation, unfairly thrown in the category of “things you buy people if you don’t know them at all.” But we’d argue that the best candle gifts are actually quite personal. You have to be intimately familiar with the type of scents a person likes (you’d never want to give a baked cookie candle to your spicy pine friend) as well as their home decor aesthetic. Otherwise, your candle gift is likely to make an appearance at the next white elephant exchange.

As far as present options go, the candle market has incredible range. There are, of course, your classic holiday scents: the aforementioned pine or cookie options; fresh, snow-inspired fragrances; rich, warming spices. There are plenty of those on this list, but also picks that are less obviously seasonal, so your recipient can burn them any time of year. The vessels vary in vibes, from simple white ceramic to gilded artwork on blown glass. There’s also something for every budget: under $30 options from Bath & Body Works and Lush; luxury candles from Nest, Diptyque, and Byredo; and everything in between. If you’re ready to wow everyone on your list with a candle that feels highly personal, check out our picks for this season.

Allure former content director Kara McGrath lighting the Nest x Pierre Marie Holiday 3-Wick Candle

    Kara McGrath

Why it’s worth it: If I had to pick just one candle to recommend in this gift guide, it’d be Nest’s Holiday, specifically the three-wick version. I’ve burned hundreds of holiday candles over the course of my career, and this one wins out every single year. Its notes of bright pine, juicy pomegranate and mandarin, and spicy cinnamon and cloves combine into what, for me, is the winter scent. “It’s both sparkly and spicy—think more festive than fir-tree vibes (although I like those, too),” says contributing commerce editor Deanna Pai. The eight-ounce $50 version makes for a perfectly good gift, but springing for the 21-ounce three-wick version for $87 is worth it if you can swing it: It burns for 100 hours, and the scent throw (a.k.a. how far its scent reaches) from just a single wick hits every corner of the house.

Why it’s worth it: Voluspa’s 12-Day Advent Calendar is the gift that keeps on giving—I recently gave this to a friend, and he literally gasped in excitement. Inside are 12 petite candles, including some of the brand’s best sellers like Gingerbread Chalet, Noble Fir Garland, Forbidden Fig, and White Cypress. They’re not all holiday-themed, either, so your giftee can stash a few away and swap them in throughout the year.

What they smell like: a little bit of everything, which also makes it a great gift to split up among friends

    Malin + Goetz

Why it’s worth it: I love a candle set for the holidays, but I love a customizable set even more. For this Malin + Goetz lineup, you can pick from six of the brand’s signature scents: Cannabis, Dark Rum, Leather, Bergamot, Otto, and Strawberry (which won a Best of Beauty Award in 2024). The fact that none of those options are particularly holidayesque arguably makes it an even better gift.

    Cereria Mollá

Why it’s worth it: Allure editors burned hundreds of candles during Best of Beauty testing this year, and this one from Cereria won out. The consensus was that this blend of velvety Damascus rose and smoky oud makes for a floral that’s darker and more intoxicating than the average bouquet. “The smell is heavenly and seasonless,” says senior news editor James Manso. “Just enough depth for snowy winter nights but freshly floral enough to complement my air conditioning in August.”

The fragrance is lovely, but the glass vessel—black with just a pop of green—is what really makes this gifting appropriate.

For our review of the best candles for gifts, we enlisted the help of multiple editors, writers, and contributors to review the products. This ensures our testing base spans different skin tones, genders, and dermatological conditions. We considered each product's performance across four primary categories: ingredients, wear and longevity, packaging, and inclusivity. For more on what's involved in our reporting, check out our complete reviews process and methodology page.

It's no secret we're huge fans of Merit's minimalist approach to makeup, and this limited-edition collaboration with London fashion house Erdem gives the brand's signature five-minute routine a romantic makeover.

Merit's pocket-purse-whatever-friendly Flush Balms are so easy to use because you can use your fingers to blend and diffuse them (hi, foolproof!) in, but I like picking up the pigment using a fluffy, dense brush for more color payoff. Speaking of color, the shade range is just chef's kiss. No matter which shade you choose, you get a satin, flushed-from-within finish that makes your cheeks look scrumptious. "I love the staying power of lip stains (you try finding time to reapply your lip color when you're running from meeting to meeting), but I absolutely hate dry lips. This is by far the most moisturizing lip stain I've ever tried that doesn't fade away in 0.2 seconds. It actually stays shiny, like a gloss but better, for hours on end and doesn't dry matte or flaky like other lip stains sometimes do. Even as it fades, it leaves behind a nice, soft, shiny wash of color. The photo above was taken after breakfast, an iced coffee, and sushi! The blush palettes pair a dewy cream with a matte powder that can be worn separately or layered to add depth and dimension to cheeks, while the lip balms deliver a sheer tint, glossy finish, and a nourishing feel, thanks to plumping peptides and smoothing bakuchiol.

I'm not usually much of a lip girlie, but the matching gloss is such a perfect color match that it makes pulling together a coordinated look so easy. Allure managing editor Alessandra Foresto applying the Clinique Almost Lipstick in Black Honey

    Alessandra Foresto

Why it's worth it: When we think of makeup shades that have earned a spot in the beauty hall of fame, Clinique's Black Honey is one of the first that comes to mind. The sheer, berry-brown shade has been an editor favorite for decades, and the brand's 6-Piece Black Honey Deluxe Makeup Holiday Gift Set gives fans six ways to wear it. The All About Shadow Octet Eye Shadow Palette features eight wearable shades, ranging from soft neutrals to rich, earthy tones, inspired by Black Honey, Pink Honey, and Nude Honey. There’s also High Impact Mascara and High Impact Gel Tech Eyeliner—both in Black Honey— adding a softer, brown-ish alternative to your usual black eye makeup. For lips, there's the original Almost Lipstick, a balmy, no-mirror-needed formula that enhances your natural lip color, plus a matching Quickliner Lip Liner for added definition. And because there's apparently no such thing as too much Black Honey, the set also includes Pop Lip + Cheek Oil, a two-in-one formula that gives lips and cheeks a dewy tint.

Tester feedback on the Clinique Almost Lipstick in Black Honey from Foresto

    AccordionItemContainerButtonLargeChevron

“I'm fully part of the Clinique's Black Honey cult. Because the formula is super hydrating and glossy, I reach for it when my lips are feeling dry from a few too many days wearing lip stains or matte lipsticks. The color is truly flattering—the brand says it looks different on everyone; it looks like a true berry on me—and the pigment is sheer but buildable. It's definitely not super long-lasting. It will make it through a cup of coffee, but be ready to reapply often. I have gone through so many tubes, I wouldn't even be able to approximate the count! The one I have now is down to the very bottom.” —Alessandra Foresto, managing editor

    Christa Joanna Lee

Why it's worth it: When it comes to making a statement with makeup, a bold eye and lip combo will never go out of style. Fashion designer Carolina Herrera knows a thing or two about timeless glamour, and its Good Girl Eye & Lip Gift Set brings together three makeup essentials for getting the look. The set’s Fabulous Eyes Liquid Eyeliner makes it easy to draw sharp, precise lines that won’t budge, while Fabulous Eyes Smudgeproof Mascara gives lashes fullness and definition without smearing. The finishing touch? Good Girl Gloss in 996 Luxe Plum, which looks more violet in the tube but transforms into a more berry-toned shade on lips. It's also infused with hyaluronic acid and peppermint for fuller-looking lips and lasting hydration.

Tester feedback on the Carolina Herrera Fabulous Eyes Liquid Eyeliner and Fabulous Eyes Smudgeproof Mascara from Lee

    AccordionItemContainerButtonLargeChevron

“I have monolids and short, stubby lashes, so suffice it to say I'm pretty picky about my eye makeup. I tend to draw a slightly thicker line so it actually shows up when my eyes are open, and this liquid liner is great for that. It goes on smoothly and, most importantly, doesn't smudge all over my lids. As for the mascara, my little lashes absolutely love the big, fluffy brush. Those stiff, plastic wands never seem to grab my tiny lash hairs quite right, but this one catches almost all of them in a single swipe. The plush bristles also do a great job of separating them, so I get fuller-looking lashes without clumps.” —Christa Joanna Lee, contributing commerce writer

Why it's worth it: Technically, Dibs Beauty's 12 Days of Dibs is an advent calendar, but we seriously doubt your giftee will have the patience to wait nearly two weeks to unwrap everything inside. Known for its easy-to-use, multitasking makeup sticks and buttery complexion duos, Dibs has packed this 12-piece set with mini versions of its biggest hits, plus a few full-size surprises. Highlights include two shades of the bestselling Desert Island Duo, which pairs cream blush and bronzer in one convenient stick; the GlowTour Duo for extra radiance; and the Jam Jam Lip in Blueberry Ice (an icy-blue balm that goes on clear for a glossy finish). The set also includes practical extras, including the LoveBeam Setting Spray, a dual-ended cheek brush, and a brush-cleaning mitt and dry shampoo spray to keep makeup tools fresh.

“Super creamy, glides on smoothly, and leaves behind the prettiest color. The Dibs Beauty No Pressure Lip Liner hits all of the above without dragging, smudging, or transferring—a true feat in the world of lip liners! And although it only comes in six shades (they absolutely should expand the range), I like to toggle between two perfect neutrals: XOXO (rosy pink) and Girl Talk (nude pink). I like to use these to trace the outline of my lips and then fill in with a hydrating lip balm, but lately I’ve been wearing them solo and loving the semi-matte look!” —Sarah Kinonen, beauty director

“For my lip products, I stick to the rivers and lakes I’m used to: clear, sticky, and long-lasting. So, although I have a few of my favorites, I was pleasantly surprised to give Dior its props. The smoothness was too good. I use it with my no-makeup-makeup looks or a casual beat when I want to step up from my usual clear gloss. So, I have to admit it: It’s worth the splurge.” —Jennet Jusu, editorial assistant

For our list of the best makeup gift sets, we considered each product's performance across five primary categories: product ingredients and efficacy, packaging, fragrance, texture, and product wear. Every product was determined to have excelled in each category by our editorial team, which is composed of in-house writers and editors as well as contributors—along with special consideration from board-certified derms and K-beauty experts.
